At least it should for those of us who have a greater understanding – an elevated relationship – with cars.

We would no more text behind the wheel as we’d attempt to disarm a time bomb on a moving rollercoaster. Or give a panther a vasectomy with a rusted butter knife. While he’s still awake.

Cars are the center of our universe. Cars define our lifestyle. We know cars passionately. We plan vacations around their use. We visit events that showcase them. Ours is a healthy appreciation for cars. And we have an equally healthy respect for them, too.

Sometimes the laws of physics can be beat. That happens when two tons of steel traveling at 70 mph are trumped by four ounces of digital “convenience.”

As keepers of the car flame we must be change agents in this social fight. We know what a car can do — artistically and brutally at speed. As car guys we must be on the front lines to carry the message, willing to share with everyone we know about the dangers of distracted driving.

We must tell everyone to stop texting while driving. We are selfish that way. Because we want them to live.

Do us a favor and sign the petition. Get your friends to do it, too. And look at the other public service messages that Coyne Communications created. Let us know which ones work best.

And get the word out.
